Modern life is full. Work, family, friends, hobbies, emails, social media, YouTube, TV, games, we all feel the need to ‘keep up’. And in the process our health suffers. We forget to drink water, we eat processed ready made food and drink coffee to make up for our lack of energy. We feel tired all the time yet struggle to sleep. Exercise is a luxury. Time off is considered extravagant or selfish. In this ‘me’ culture of entitlement we spend very little time actually looking after ourselves.
And this can wreak hovoc with our health. Simply missing an hours sleep a night can result in disorientation, depression, erratic eating and weight gain. Eating processed foods can lead to malnutrition, depression, over eating and weight gain. Drinking too much coffee increases adrenalin causing the body to be in a constant state of fight or flight, leading to poor sleep, erratic eating and weight gain (do you see a pattern here?!)
And don’t get me started on dehydration…
While the body is in stress mode (fight or flight) it’s not healing. Blood is directed to the heart, lungs and muscular system, ready to run or fight. Blood is diverted away from the systems that are not involved with survival ie digestion, endocrine, immune and reproductive systems, which is why long term stress affects your digestion and assimilation of food, women have problems with their periods and have difficulty getting pregnant and illness becomes chronic. And it doesn’t matter that the stress is no longer a sabre tooth tiger or another tribe coming to kill us. Adrenalin and cortisol is raised and seratonin, dopamine and oxytocin are reduced.
Your body is intelligent. It knows what it’s doing. Inflammation is an intelligent response so rather than treating the symptoms we need to look a little deeper to find out why your body is doing what it’s doing and help it to resolution.
As a nutritional therapist I see nutrition as not just what you eat. It’s about everything that nourishes you, everything that sustains you. It’s what you eat, drink, wear, do, think, see, experience, your emotions, your perceptions, your fears, what makes you tick, what motivates you, what makes you happy, relationships, family, exercise, dreams and your ancestry.
When you book in with me I send you a questionnaire to fill in and send back before our appointment. This saves time and covers various aspects of your life including diet and medications, lifestyle, illness and wellness, your conception to present and ancestry, what you know of your parents and grandparents. The more information you can give the better we can build a picture of why you have reached this point and what we can do to improve it.
Nothing works in isolation and healing must come from addressing the whole. So whether you’re wanting to treat a specific condition, beat the blues or simply live a little more healthily I can help you look at all areas of your life and make small positive doable changes that over time become healthy habits.
